King, F H

Felix Houston King, seated second from left, in about 1902 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was there with his six sons, while his wife was dying in the hospital. View a War-time photo of Felix and his brother William (of Co. E).

Felix Houston King was born Aug. 15, 1840; married Margaret Louise Payne; and died Dec. 24, 1903 near Coosa, Georgia. According to family history, Felix was the 8th's color sergeant, and was wounded several times and kept returning to the unit. This is verified in a letter by Major Magruder to Colonel Towers. Click here to read the letter, which describes Felix H. King being badly wounded at Gettysburg as the 8th's color bearer. The last time he was ordered to remain in the hospital by Robert E. Lee.

Felix enlisted in Company K of the 8th Georgia Infantry in Oglethorpe, Georgia. He had 3 brothers in the 8th: Elzaphan, Palemon, (both also in Co. K); and William A. King (in Co. E).
