Adolphus Randolph Johnson was born May 15, 1839. His father was Edward Coke Johnson (b. Sep. 23, 1808 in S.C.), and his mother was Elizabeth "Betsey" Bevill (b. Feb. 11, 1823 in S.C.). They lived in the Floyd Springs area, Floyd County, prior to and during the Civil War. According to the 1860 census, Edward and Elizabeth Johnson lived with their 8 children and one daughter-in-law Mary, on their 600-acre farm worth $8,300. Mary Zuber was Adolphus R. Johnson's first wife, and she died on Dec. 2, 1860. Adolphus was a Sergeant in Company A, the Rome Light Guards, and was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia, May 6, 1864. He was exchanged from Elmira, New York, at James River, Virginia, on March 15, 1865. Christopher Loraine Johnson was Adolphus' brother, and was also a member of Company A of the 8th Georgia Infantry. Christopher became a 2nd Sergeant, and surrendered at Appomattox with the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865. According to family lore, Union forces occupied the Johnson home in Floyd Springs. Prior to the arrival of the military, the family buried the family silver. Adolphus was a teacher. On Feb. 8, 1866, he married Courtney Eliza Tomlinson (b. Mar. 27, 1844 in NC; d. Mar. 21, 1911, GA). They had 12 children. Adolphus Johnson died on Jan. 24, 1912. They are both buried at the Curryville Baptist Church Cemetery, Gordon County, Georgia. The Johnson family still lives on the land he purchased in Gordon County, Georgia, after the War.
