William C. Dunlap was born in Jasper County, Georgia, Sept. 9, 1838, and was a licensed preacher when he enlisted in Company D, the Echol's Guards, on May 18, 1861. He was appointed chaplain on February 22, 1862. The Southern Christian Advocate of Aug. 21, 1862 stated: "Rev. Dunlap, Chaplain of the 8th Georgia Regiment writes that in the brigade, they have 3 chaplains. They concluded to unite their efforts and hold a protracted meeting, the result of which was the awakening and conversion of sinners, and the reclaiming of many backsliders." He resigned on February 7, 1865. After the War, he helped form the Indian Springs "Campmeeting" in the 1890s, and was Commissioner of Education. William Dunlap died in Covington, Georgia, on Jan. 12, 1896. [Information from "Smite Them Hip and Thigh!: Georgia Methodist Ministers in the Confederate Military," by Gerald Smith.
