"Civil War on the Internet"

Vol. XXV No. 4, May 1999, page 19
by Dave Smith

.... This month's first site to visit is Dave Larson's wonderful tribute to the 8th Georgia Infantry, which has been up on the Web since August of 1998 at: http://home.earthlink.net/~larsrbl/8thGeorgiaInfantry.html

The 8th Georgia fought in the eastern theater in Longstreet's I Corps, participating in engatements from First Manassas to Appomattox (which included a side trip to Georgia in 1863 as part of Hood's division in the Battle of Chickamauga). They saw as much action as any unit on either side.

This site has a wealth of information about the 8th Georgia Infantry, is organized well and loads quickly. As many Civil War sites go, the idea of the site came about as a tribute to Dave's great-grandfather, William J. Andrews, a private in Co. E of the 8th Georgia.

Within the site, Dave notes, the reader will find the history, battles, flags, company rosters, and photos and writings of the descendants of the regiment.

"All phases of the development of my Web site have been challenging," says Dave. "Deciding what information to post, making the page interesting and not boring, and keeping up with the requests of visitors to the page has been very time consuming."

Indeed, for most Civil War webmasters, the sheer volume of correspondence that results from publication on the Net comes as a complete surprise.

Keeping the 8th's page simple and easy to navigate are two items that make the 8th Georgia's site unique.

"The web page has no frames - I personally hate them (as does this reviewer!). And something that has grown beyond my wildest expectations is the "Descendants" section, where over 40 [now 90 in March 2000] descendants of soldiers of the 8th Georgia have contacted me," says Dave.

He has some pretty sage advice for would-be Civil War webmasters. "Make your site informative, and make your index (or main) page relatively small, and quick to load. Don't expect much external gratitude, for your main reward will be personal self-satisfaction."

Dave also maintains a personal Web page, with information on Rome, Ga., the 3d Georgia Cavalry, [the 10th Alabama Infantry], Civil War genealogy, and Custer and the Little Big Horn. The Web address is listed at the end of this column...
