Biography:

William Jefferson Andrews, my great-grandfather, was born in Troup County, Georgia, on September 23, 1835. He was the oldest of 7 children. The family moved to Chambers County, Alabama during the 1840s, and returned to Butts County, Georgia in the late 1840s, then to Floyd County, Georgia in 1852.

William is shown as 14 years old, attending school, in the 1850 U. S. Census, in Butts County, Georgia. In the 1860 Census, in Floyd County, William is 23 years old and described as a "laborer."

William appears as a member of the Old Fellowship Baptist Church in 1859. This church was located on the Thomas S. Price plantation, near the Coosa River on lot #298, approx. one mile from the Andrews farm.

For more information on the Andrews family, and about William's parents and 6 siblings, view my Andrews Genealogy page.

Summary of military service in the Confederacy: William enlisted in the Miller Rifles (Captain Towers' Company, later Company E) on May 14, 1861. This unit was one of three Companies in the 8th Georgia Volunteer Infantry raised in Rome, Floyd County during the War. William was detailed to Camp Winder Hospital (Division 4) in Richmond, from May 24, 1862 through February 9, 1863. He rejoined the regiment in time for the siege of Suffolk, Virginia in April and May of 1863, and was part of the Gettysburg Campaign.

William received a gunshot wound to the left leg during Longstreet's July 2nd assault in the Rose Woods near the Wheatfield and remained at Gettysburg when Lee's Army of Northern Virginia returned to Virginia. His left tibia was fractured, and he was one of the many patients at Camp Letterman Hospital in Gettysburg, after being moved there from Hood's Div. Hospital at the Plank Farm. He transferred back to Camp Winder Hospital, Richmond, in October of 1863, this time as a patient. He was furloughed on December 24, 1863, and did not return to active duty. He apparently spent the remainder of the War at home in Rome, Georgia. (View William's military service record details, below.)

William moved to Provo, Utah in 1869 with his family, via an immigrant wagon train. A Mormon (Latter Day Saint) missionary named Jesse Crosby baptized several of the Andrews (and Beasleys - view John Beasley's autobiography) and evidently persuaded them to move to Utah. For the rest of his life, William supposedly experienced leg problems and fainting spells, as result of his wounds while serving in the 8th Georgia Infantry. He married Elizabeth Dianah Smith in 1876. He died on February 19, 1896, in Provo, Utah. William was a farmer, blacksmith, mechanic, and sheriff during his lifetime.
