144 names and service records from Henderson's "Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia..." follow below. Also, a Company and Regimental history if located at the bottom of this page.

Please visit Joseph Fleming's excellent website "Historical Sketch of Co G, 8th Georgia, CSA" for an account by his ancestor, David Green Fleming, which was published in the Hawkinsville, Georgia Dispatch in 1879. Fleming's sketch includes a list of privates in Co. G (but differs slightly from Henderson's roster below), an exciting account of the First Manassas battle, the origin of George "Tige" Anderson's nickname, and other first hand campaign details.

Please let me know of any information or photos available for other Company G soldiers. Thanks!

This company left Hawkinsville for Richmond, Va. May 18, 1861. Arriving there we proceeded at once to Camp Bartow at Howard's Grove. There we were mustered into service.

As soon as the organization of the regiment was perfected we were sent to Harper's Ferry; thence, after a few days, to Winchester, Va. At the latter place we suffered much from sickness; consequently, when ordered to Manassas on July 19 nearly half of our company was unfit for duty. Those of us who were able were at Manassas on July 21 and there experienced real war. We camped and maneuvered near Manassas and in front of Washington City until winter. We spent the winter in comfortable quarters near Centreville, Va. and about March 1, 1862, the army was sent to the peninsula near old Yorktown. On arrival at that point our brigade had to retake a portion of the line just captured by the enemy. We did this in short order without a single casualty in our company's ranks. Were attacked at different times the several days we were on that line, all of which were repulsed without loss to our ranks. We went from Yorktown, through Williamsburg, to Chickahominy, in front of Richmond. Escaped the battle of Seven Pines but were in several engagements during the "Seven Days' Battles" in front of Richmond June 24-30, losing many of our best men. We were in the battle of 2d Manassas, August 29-30, 1862. From thence we went into Maryland, being in battles at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg with but slight loss. We then went back to Virginia, had a short rest near Winchester, then went to Fredericksburg, where we were engaged December 13, with slight loss.

The winter of 1862-3 we spent near Fredericksburg. About April 1, 1863, passing through Richmond and Petersburg, being a part of Longstreet's Corps, we were sent to the front of Suffolk, Va., where we engaged in several skirmishes with slight loss. This diversion caused our regiment to miss Chancellorsville, Va., May 3d. We rejoined main army just before Pennsylvania campaign. Suffered heavily at Gettysburg, Pa. and Funkstown, Md. in that campaign. Went back to Virginia and remained until about October 1, 1863, when Longstreet was ordered to General Bragg's relief in Tennessee. Passing through South Carolina our brigade was switched off to Charleston. Relieved Gist's Brigade on James Island, where we rested one month, escaping Chickamauga battles. Rejoining Longstreet in November, we were sent to Knoxville, Tenn., and lost heavily in effort to capture Fort Loudon in that city. Spent winter of 1863-4 in East Tennessee, the "Valley Forge" of the War Between the States. Suffered much; all communication and supplies were cut off. Went back to Virginia just in time to save Lee's army at Wilderness, May 6, 1864. Losses considerable in that engagement and continual engagements until we reached front of Richmond. In battles of Fort Harrison, Darbytown Road and Deep Bottom we lost several men. The winter of 1864-5 we were in front of Richmond. Left Richmond for Petersburg, April 1, 1865, thence to Appomattox, where we surrendered April 9, 1865.

Our brigade was composed of the 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th Georgia Volunteer regiments. Besides these we had the first Georgia Regulars the first year, Rylander's Battalion (from Americus) the second year, and the 59th Regiment Ga. Vol. Inf., the last two years of the war. The brigade was commanded nearly the whole time by General G. T. (Tige) Anderson. We had for division commanders General John B. Hood and General C. W. Field, the division being composed of Hood's Texas, Anderson's Georgia, Benning's Georgia and Law's Alabama brigades.
