Rome, Georgia in 1864

Rome during the 1864 occupation by Sherman and the Union Army

The Oostanaula River is in the foreground, and the bridge at left was partially destroyed by Confederate forces when they evacuated the town in May of 1864. Most of the Rome civilians were gone during this period.

Note: Bob at History Resources states the above is incorrect, and that “This bridge was ordered destroyed by a court for references to ownership and the right to build the bridge.” (Feb. 2009)
