Caption from page 62 of "Don Troiani's Civil War," (c.1995):

"In this earlier version of 'Emblems of Valor,' [above] a soldier-artist of the 8th Georgia applies honors to his unit's battle flag in white paint. When research by historian Howard Madaus revealed that the honors in blue were the last to be added, although the engagements predated the ones applied in white, Troiani painted a second version of the scene." [below]
