1st RNCB

The commissioned reserve units, such as Reserve NMCBs, CBMUs, NCFSUs, etc. were authorized beginning with battalions in July 1960. During that decade the battalion headquarters element and the attached Seabee companies were organized reporting to the Naval Reserve's Naval Districts (later retitled Naval Reserve Readiness Commands).

In 1969 the 1st Reserve Naval Construction Brigade (1st RNCB), was established as a flag command and operated within the Naval Reserve with management responsibility to include all reserve Seabee construction units. Those units are described elsewhere on this web site. The units were unofficially often collectively referred to as "The Green Machine".

RNCF

The establishment of the Reserve Naval Construction Force (RCNF) occurred in 1971. This umbrella organization encompassed not only the Seabee units of the 1st Reserve Naval Construction Brigade but also the Naval Reserve facilities engineering related units and staff billets organized to be filled with Reserve Civil Engineer Corps officers. The R-CEC officer assignments, including assignments to Readiness Command billets, were managed under the RNCF from that point forward. Naval Reserve Readiness Commands (REDCOM) retained input into some individual staff billets (for 5105 designator billets) such as the 'REDCOM Facilities/Staff Civil Engineer'. Those staff billets are not listed below.

Each unit in Table 1 below was made up of reserve CEC officers with enlisted men and women. This organization was sometimes unofficially referred to as "The Khaki Machine".

The organization of the Reserve Naval Construction Force changed from decade to decade to conform to existing support requirements.
