History of

Midwest CBHUs

Construction Battalion Hospital Units

The unit's mission was to support the setup, maintenance and utilities operations of Fleet Hospitals in the Navy Reserve Fleet Hospital Program.

The prgram was begun in 1983 when CBHU-113 was established at Forest Park, Illionis and attached to the SIXTH RNCR, NAS Glenview, IL. A second unit, CBHU-118 was established in 1984 at the St. Louis Area Support Center, Granite City, IL. Eventually there were 9 CBHUs nationwide (FY89) having approximately 1200 Seabee billets. Some units were organized for use with a 250-bed FH and others to a 500-bed FH. A unit for a 1000-bed hospital was planned.

A CBHUs consisted of a officer either a LT or a LCDR CEC USNR and an enlisted compliment of approximately 130 including equipment operators, utilitiesmen, and builders.

The CBHUs generally performed annual training duty supporting a Fleet Hospital also on annual training duty at the time.

A typical AT for Midwest units was the setup and operation of a "containerized" Fleet Hospital complex (large expandable tents and standard ISO containers) at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA.

By 1991 the program had been reduced to nine units.

The NR CBHU program was ended in 1994 when active duty Construction Battalion Units (CBU) absorbed the mission.
