Salt Lick's Tree Chopper: Tough Hunter but Handsome & Lovable too!

ON GAME: Chopper has pure grit, outrageous enthusiasm and unbelievable tenacity. He fearlessly wades straight in on bear and wild hogs. When possible he climbs trees after the game. In his 1st wild hog competition Chopper alone was accomplishing what two other hounds could do. While just a spectator in a recent national treeing competition Chopper was asked to leave the area because the judges couldn't hear and count the treeing dogs in the contest over Chopper. Before his eviction other handlers were bringing their dogs over to stand beside Chopper in hopes that their dogs would catch Chopper's enthusiasm. In the mountains of Virginia which has some of the roughest terrain and the hardest running bears Chopper, when running with other dogs that were said to be the last to return to the truck after these incredible chases, was the last dog to give up on the bear that would not tree.

AT HOME: Chopper is good sized male Majestic of about 110 lbs. His coloration and pattern is that of an “old fashioned” black and tan. He is extremely good-natured and is glad to meet everyone. Although he was raised without children he takes to them readily. When he saw kids on bicycles for the first time Chopper immediately asked if he could have "one of them". Chopper has always been allowed full access to his puppies since they were born. He is the best father we have ever seen. He spends hours each day cleaning his pups. When we put the pups out in the yard, Chopper lies down with them and stands guard over them. Chopper has a great sense of humor, is eager to please and travels well. Recently an old bear hunter from back in West Virginia came by to see the litter of pups that he had “heard so much about”. Upon arrival he locked onto Chopper and spent the next hour with him. Then the old bear hunter made the statement “ I wouldn’t care if a dog that looked as good as Chopper didn’t even hunt. I would just like to have him around the house!”

On Saturday, May 5th, 2007, Lance and Steve took two Salt Lick Kennel's male Majestics back into the hills of West Virginia for one of their hound competitions. Both hounds were entered into two competitions apiece and both came home with two 1st Place trophies apiece.

Salt Lick's Tree Chopper did it again by taking 1st place in the prestigious Tri-County Coonhunters Association treeing contest held 19 July, 2008 (right to left: Chopper, Lance Morrow). As you can see, it was sponsored by Gander Mountain.

He won his 1st Place trophies by blowing away his competition in water races and coon treeing. Chopper gets so excited at these competitions it is a wonder he has anything left when it comes time for him to compete. By the way, in a typical water race the hounds are in a very tight pack as they swim across the lake. But in Chopper's heat, Chopper left the pack far behind in his wake. That dog can sure swim!
