Social imprinting

Here at Salt Lick Kennels all of our puppies are "social imprints". Our pups are born in the house and are handled constantly from the minute they are born. While pups are in the house nursing all our other hounds are constantly visiting them and they all take the time to clean the pups.

When pups are three weeks old we start traveling with them in trucks and cars. Also at 3 weeks of age the pups are introduced to eating from a dish and are partially paper-trained.

At 4 weeks of age the puppies are taken out into the woods where they spend the day with their parents and other dogs. (We plan ahead so pups are born in spring and summer, making all of this is possible). They romp and play all day with other litters of Salt Lick hound puppies. People drop in to play with the pups on a regular basis. They have their own swimming pool to play in and keep cool. We have a very unusual situation here that allows us to raise social imprints.

At 5 weeks of age we take the pups to the Shenandoah River and when we wade out into the river the whole litter is confident to swim out and follow us. By 6 weeks our pups are out swimming like beaver. Also at that age we start taking litters out to local baseball games and outdoor ice cream vendors where the pups get to meet people of all ages. These experiences make our pups friendly with children, adults (stranger anxiety goes away) and other dogs (our pups become non-aggressive).

Also at 6 weeks of age we begin to take the pups and their parents out for "mock hunts" sometimes up to 2 hours to do a 300 yard loop through our fields and woods.

We do all of this so our pups will be well socialized by the time they are ready to go to their new homes. It is a large commitment but our pup rearing process makes our hounds superior to ordinary kennel dogs. People, especially houndsmen, who meet our dogs are very impressed with our pups' confidence, ability to get along with others and willingness to please. Our social imprinting greatly enhances the hounds' success at hunting or becoming a wonderful family pet.
