In the initial incarnation of the site, Stanley wasn't
allowed in the running because he didn't make movies often enough to apply. That is no more. In our opinion, he might be the
one. And he might have found a way to live on in Rockerdom...by escaping through the "Kubrick Pass."
Basically, he died before he had time to fall off The Rocker.
There are plenty people who feel Eyes Wide Shut
is proof that he lost it, but if you compare it to his other movies, it's still good. It isn't a bad version of the director's
vision (Godfather III), and it isn't a departure from what made a director great (Kundun, Amistad).
Eyes Wide Shut is merely a very good movie from a director
who makes great movies. The fact that none of his other movies can even be suggested as non-masterpieces (as for Barry Lyndon,
hey, he shot it in candlelight) means that we give him the benefit of the doubt. Even if you don't, no one can argue that
he's come closer than anyone.
