Humanity’s fascination with nonlinear and multi-linear modes of expression grows from our struggle to escape the essential linearity of our lives. Our lives are linear and the human desire for immorality seems to span the generations.
But linearity as a concept continues to fascinate the human mind. In reality, there are two areas of linearity: time and space. Non linearity of time is impossible; however, non linearity of space is possible and exists.
- Linear: pertain to or consisting of lines; linear perspective: perspective which regards only the positions, magnitudes and forms of the objects delineated
- Nonlinear: Without lines
- Multi linear: Having many lines
All text becomes linear when it is read. (p. 106) The difference between linear and multi-linear texts is that the author creates the linearity of the linear text while the reader creates the linearity of the multi-linear text. Therefore, in a multi-linear text each reader creates their own linearity.
This web site utilizes multi-linear design. The reader is free to begin and end at any node (or page). While a certain amount of linearity consists in the structure, the site has been designed to minimize the readers awareness of any linear structure. The reader is completely free to move between any of the lexia or between this text and any juncture of the metatext as the reading experience dictates.
