ABOUT LAPIS LAZULI

Lapis Lazuli is a neo noir landscape that might have existed in the present day if Mancini, Mingus, and Morricone had ruled the planet in the place of Beatlemania.

A planet of apes vs hippies and beatniks…The blues had a baby and they named it Elmer Bernstein.

A lost chapter in the history of primordial rock.

In 1987 Kurt Wolf dropped out of art school to join fellow drop out Jon Spencer's band, Pussy Galore. Saying Pussy Galore failed to put the rotting corpse of 80's rock to rest is like saying Rodney Dangerfield can't get no…

One hour later… he would join Jon and Cristina Spencer's ongoing Battle Royale, Boss Hogg.
Several nude LP covers later…

Out of the ashes of Pussy Galore and LA hardcore band, Crucifix, rose the monolithic sound of Loudspeaker followed by the LP "Supernatural."

The flip side of Loudspeaker's bipolar punch, the no wave inspired meltdown of Emma Peel’s play "Emma For Me" LP, introduces twin vocal terror to downtown NYC!

In 1995 Kurt Wolf joined Jim Thirwell's Foetus Inc. for the European leg of the Gash tour and in 96 recorded the "York" live LP with Jim and Lydia Lunch. Kurt will also appear on the latest Foetus album, "Love".

Kurt Wolf's Lapis Lazuli has recently made its live debut at Joe's Pub and is currently putting the finishing touches on the first album, working titled " byzantine".

So put away your Clay Aiken records and make room for the new sound of Lapis Lazuli!

Lapis Luzuli @ Joe's Pub NYC 12/12/05

Former Pussy Galore axeman Kurt Wolf showed off his newest musical project, Lapis Luzuli at New York’s venerable Joe’s Pub. The sounds were an undulating, abrasive, and introspective mix of edgy, melodic processed guitar work backed by subtle yet effective beat-driven background loops. Overhead, hypnotic visuals accompanied the soundscapes. Perhaps if Ennio Morricone made a Raga pilgrimage to India alongside the Stooges in the early- seventies, this is what they would have recorded for some lost cinematic masterpiece.

Lapis Lazuli is the latest incarnation of the downtown guitar punisher Kurt Wolf, an alumnus of rude, iconoclastic outfits like Pussy Galore, Boss Hog[g], and Foetus Inc. Best know for music that turns a deaf ear on finesse, Wolf is now experimenting with an atmospheric, noirish sound.
