A report today on the BBC explains why scientists are concerned that we are experiencing the "Sixth Mass Extinction" in the history of our world. In describing the value of life in monetary terms, it states that some years ago, when the global annual gross product was about $18 trillion, US researchers calculated the value of the goods and services provided by the Earth to the world economy (such as likely remedies for diseases) to be $33 trillion.
