Kirtan Sangha - Kirtan Lessons
Lessons are available for the following subjects:
  • HARMONIUM
    Lessons include technique and theory for traditional approach to the harmonium and Indian music, plus Western (chordal) technique. Lessons also include understanding the structure and functions of the harmonium, including working with drones.
  • KIRTAN LEXICON
    Lessons may cover any or all of the following topics: The meanings of terms (lyrics) used in traditional kirtan, including overview of deities; the importance of proper pronunciation; reading and writing the Devanagari script (the script of Sanskrit, Hindi, and related languages) - generally indispensable for proper pronunciation for non-Indian language speakers.
  • TAMBOURA (Tanpura)
    Comprehensive instruction on the drone instrument that is central to virtually all Indian music, including kirtan. Lessons include fine tuning, proper playing technique, and both North and South Indian playing styles.
  • KIRTAN PERCUSSION
    Lessons include use and technique for kirtan percussion instruments, including manjira, kartals (finger cymbals), ghungri (ankle bells).
Lessons are available for the following instruments for serious students only
(Minimum three-month commitment with weekly lessons and daily practice of at least one hour; follow-up referrals to advanced teachers recommended and offered for advancing students):
  • TABLA
    Standard training in Classical tabla technique. Follow-up study may focus on rhythms for bhakti sangeet (devotional music, such as kirtan and bhajan).
  • SITAR
    Standard training in Classical sitar technique required as pre-requisite to advanced raga training with a guru. Referrals available for advancing students.
Please Note: Students must obtain instruments prior to lessons. Assistance in obtaining quality instruments is available for students committing to study.
