FUNCTION: Surveillance, Prevention, Control of Infection TITLE: GLoving for O.R. Procedures _________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE: To provide guidelines to all O.R. personnel for the proper methods of gloving. POLICY: Two methods of gloving are used - the closed method and the open method. The closed method is preferred because there is less chance of contamination of the outside of the sterile gowns by the hands. PROCEDURE: 1. Closed Gloving a. The hands are brought only through to the cuffs of the gown. The cuffs must cover both hands so that the cuff edges have not been touched by the bare hands. b. Pick up the first glove by the folded cuff with the hand covered by cuff of the gown. c. Place the glove, palm and thumb down, on the forearm of the opposite hand. d. Pull the glove cuff over the knitted cuff so that it completely covers the cuff. e. Work fingers into the glove onto the hand using covered hand. f. Repeat process with the opposite hand. 2. Open Gloving a. When gowning, the hands are brought through the cuffs of the gown. After gowning, pick up one glove by its cuff - either hand may be used. Pull the glove onto the opposite hand using the cuff and being careful not to touch any other part of the glove. b. With the gloved hand, slide the fingers (excluding thumb) inside cuff of second glove. Pull the glove onto the hand and the cuff of the glove over cuff of gown. NOTE: Caution must be taken to avoid inward rolling of the glove cuff as it is being brought up on the hand. This would contaminate the outside of the glove from the hand. c. Draw the cuff of the opposite glove over the gown cuff.
