FUNCTION: Surveillance, Prevention, Control of Infection TITLE: Cleaning Procedures for Day Surgery _________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE: To assist in maintaining a sterile environment in Day Surgery. POLICY: Personnel assigned to Day Surgery area will wear scrubs. A lab coat will be worn when leaving the unit and removed upon returning to the unit. I. Procedures (Between Surgical Cases): 1. Upon completion of each surgical case, trash will be doubled bagged in red liners, tied off and disposed of in proper receptacle. Receptacle will be wiped with germicidal solution* and lined with plastic liners. 2. Remove soiled linen in yellow liners after completion of each case, tie off liners and place in receptacle. Wipe with germicidal solution and replace liners. 3. Upon case completion, wipe furnishings and fixtures in the Operating Room with germicidal solution. A clean cloth is used for each case. Insure that furnishings and fixtures are wiped dry. 4. Mop Operating Room floor with clean mophead and germicidal solution. Insure that all areas of floor are completely saturated, to include baseboards. A clean mophead will be used for each between case cleaning. 5. Using clean cloth and germicidal solution, clean operating table. Insure that all surface of table are clean. Dry and make up with clean linen. II. Daily Procedures: 1. Clean counters of Nurses' Station with clean cloth and germicidal solution. Mop area thoroughly. 2. Clean all sinks, using germicidal solution. Insure that faucets are cleaned during this procedure. Wipe sinks and faucets dry. 3. Mop floors in hallway and ancillary rooms using clean mophead and germicidal solution. 4. Clean all counters, tables, and work surfaces with clean cloth and germicidal solution. 5. Restock paper towel and soap dispensers. 6. All ancillary rooms will be mopped daily with a clean mophead and germicidal solution: anesthesia room, clean and soiled utility rooms, sterilizer and storage rooms. 7. Damp dust O.R. Supervisor's Office furniture and vacuum carpet. 8. Stretchers will be wiped with germicidal solution, dried and made up with clean linen after each used. 9. Clean shelves of Linen Cart with germicidal solution. 10. Using a clean cloth, dust furnishing in Physician and Employee Lounge. * See Section 5, "Selection, Use and Measurement of Cleaning Supplies". 11. Vacuum carpet in Physician and Employee Lounge. 12. Using a clean dustmop, clean floors inn Physician, Employee, and Patient Dressing Rooms. Follow with wet mopping; using clean mophead and germicidal solution. Insure that Patient Dressing Room is stocked with gowns. III. Weekly Procedure: 1. Using a clean cloth and germicidal solution, wipe all lights fixtures, doors, door frames, and walls. Include vents in this procedure. 2. Wash interior and exterior of trash receptacles and linen hamper stands with germicidal solution. Dry thoroughly. 3. Using germicidal solution and clean cloth, wipe interior and exterior of Physician and patient lockers. Wipe exterior of employee lockers. IV. Monthly Procedure: Hard surface floors will be spray-buffed monthly to restore appearance. V. Quarterly Procedure: Hard surface floors will be stripped, sealed, and waxed.
