FUNCTION: Management of Human Resources/Education TITLE: Orientation: Operating Room _________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE: To enable the operating room personnel, through knowledge of procedures, instruments and equipment, to competently assist the Surgeon and Anesthesiologist in all surgical procedures. POLICY: 1. Operating Room orientation addressing department specific policies will begin after hospital orientation. The new employee is assigned a qualified staff personnel. The qualified staff personnel will be assigned to the new employee for as long as necessary. 2. All new personnel shall be given a complete tour of the Surgical Suite, identifying operating rooms, equipment and supplies, storage areas, and dressing areas. a. Introduction to staff and locker assignment. b. Orientation to O.R. reference books, i.e., Policy & Procedure Manual, Disaster Manual, MSDS Manual, Department Specific Hazardous Chemicals and Equipment, Scheduling Book, Implant Book, O.R. Log Book, and Specimen Log Book. c. Equipment and Emergency Supplies: Basic knowledge of all equipment in the O.R., general knowledge of O.R. beds, stretchers, autoclaves, charging and lab computers, etc. Location of crash carts, tracheostomy trays, chest tray, malignant hyperthermia tray, and location of fire extinguishers, alarms, valves and exits. d. Supplies: Receiving, location, storage and shelving. e. O.R. forms: location of records and charge slips and how to accurately complete all forms applicable. Knowledge of on-call sign-up sheets, work schedules, time sheets, and disaster call roster. f. Communications systems are identified and instructions for use of the following: operating room intercom's, operating room telephones, cardiac arrest code for the operating room. Information to be transmitted prior to transfer of patients to a post-anesthesia area. g. Location of preference cards, how to use them, correct them, and find supplies per procedure card. 3. Orientation checklist shall be completed within the orientation period (one to three weeks) and returned to Unit Supervisor or Department Manager. 4. Skills checklist will be completed end of orientation or internship. 5. Employees are encouraged to join their professional organization (ie., AORN, CORT).
