Christian Outreach & Missions

"for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. ... Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." -- Matthew 25:35-36, 41.

Prayers for Mission and Outreach

Prayer For Courage to do Justice
O Lord, open my eyes that I may see the needs of others
Open my ears that I may hear their cries;
Open my heart so that they need not be without succor;
Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong,
Nor afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich.
Show me where love and hope and faith are needed,
And use me to bring them to those places.
And so open my eyes and my ears
That I may this coming day be able to do some work of peace for thee. Amen.
-- Alan Paton (1903–1988), author and political activist, South Africa

Prayer for Generous Giving
Teach us, good Lord,
To serve you as you deserve;
To give and not count the cost;
To fight and not heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest;
To labor and not to ask for any reward,
Except that of knowing that we do your will;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

-- Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556), Spanish priest and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

Prayer of Gratitude

O Lord:

In a world where many are lonely, we thank you for our friendships;

In a world where many are captive, we thank you for our freedom;

In a world where many are hungry, we thank you for your provision;

We pray that you will: enlarge our sympathy, deepen our compassion, and give us grateful hearts.

In Christ's name, Amen.

-- Terry Waite, emissary of the Church of England, held hostage in Lebanon 1,763 days.
