Beaded snakes and other stuff

Bead crochet snake necklaces

About 6 years ago I took a class in Balkan Beaded Crochet from a wonderful teacher named Miriam Milgram.  Hooked on the technique, I developed a pattern for a snake that measures about 32" long and can be worn as a necklace.  The snakes are made with size 11 or 12 beads and cotton crochet thread.

The bead crochet rattlesnake below was my second necklace pattern and I am currently refining the pattern for the beaded snake bracelet.  Since then I have made two more rattlesnakes in different colors and am currently working on a snake that may measure 12' when finished.

strung necklace of beaded beads and lampwork flower bead

I bought the lampwork bead by Nancy Pilgrim a number of years ago and couldn't figure out what to do with it.  Inspired by Carol Wilcox Wells' beaded beads, I figured out my own using crystals and fire-polished beads.  The green beads are antique pressed beads that I picked up at a flea market.  The necklace turned out to be rather heavy so I added a counterwight of beads in the back.  For some reason, the finished necklace reminded me of  children's  sparkly dreams at Christmas, thus the name.

Why is Everybody Always picking on Me?

At the left is my latest project, a 15' 6" snake with 7 derogatory sayings about snakes like "lower than a snake's belly" written on its belly.  The piece is called "Why is Everybody Always Picking on Me?".  The snake is done with size 8/0 beads and  took me about 400 hours over a little more than a year to make.

macrame and bead bracelets

The fascination with beads runs in the family because my niece Melissa is selling her own macrame bracelets that incorporate beads and shells.  She graciously showed me her technique but, so far, it is more fun to see what she designs.
