"Hello, cousin many times over (as are most Nantucket descendants - I was a Swain before marriage).
I note you list the popularly disseminated English line for William Gayer of Nantucket. Are you aware of:
Gayre's Book, being A History of the Family of Gayre by Lieut.-Colonel Robert Gayre and R.L. Gair (Edinburgh & London: Oliver and Boyd, 1959)?
Both authors have impressive credentials, and their research shows that the line of Humphry Gayre ended in co-heiresses; he had no son William, nor did any of his brothers.
In reference to William Gayer of Nantucket and his brother, Sir John Gayer of India, they say: '... until further research can be done which might yield more exact information, we cannot be more precise as to their exact ancestry, although there can be no doubt that they are members of the family.' "
When I asked if I could quote the material in the e-mail, Gene followed with this:
"Of course you may include this information on the page. I found the book, I believe, at the Newberry Library in Chicago. . . . I photocopied only those few pages that pertained to their conclusions about Humphry's children and to William and Sir John, including their wills, and it was most convincing. But I do not find any indication that any others of William's descendants in this country have ever seen this book!"
I will be glad to include any other opinions and/or results of research on this line (or for any other of my lines listed in this website for that matter). Exchange of ideas are VERY important; actual FACTS are extremely difficult to find.
