ARTISM

 AUTISM

Cecilia expresses herself with drawings, photographs and facial expressions better than she does with words.

She is beginning to learn to read now, as a young adult, no longer enrolled in school, but she does not write yet.

As one of her proud parents, I love all the art she has created. It helps me understand Cecilia, helps me begin to understand the workings of her mind.

Of all the mediums of artistic expression available to her, photography is her favorite. The digital camera we own is very simple to operate. It has an auto-focus lens and it automatically adjusts exposure according to available lighting.

I wish all special education departments could afford to put digital cameras in the hands of special kids.

The schools don't need more computers. These kids don't need another "Big Bird" CD to teach them the alphabet. These kids crave the self-expression made possible by photography.

Cecilia, age 7

Cecilia today

Autistic children can create art and photographs and express themselves beautifully. Mentally retarded adults create with wisdom. Cecilia's Pet Gallery is the artistic expression of one young woman with autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, PDD-NOS. I hope you enjoy it. (signed) Joseph Klock
