Monet staunchly fought the academic attempt to destroy the Impressionist movement, supporting independent shows, while at the same time, demanding to be shown at the Salon d'Automne. But, he also advocated compromise, to attempt to resolve differences, and avoid any recourse to extreme measures. "We must not fight indiscriminately," he said.
