Sarah was beyond his reach.
The words that sounded through Jareth's mind, plaguing him as he spent
hours standing
upon the highest balcony of the castle beyond the goblin city. Hours
he longed to have a
second chance.
Soft whispers had haunted him, her shadow had followed him, ever since
the day he had
brought Sarah to his labyrinth to save the child. Ever since then he
had been taunted by
the underlying fact: he had been beaten.
This slip of a girl had come like a whirlwind, at first seeming like
all the others. Then
in a twist of fate she had turned his world upside down. This dreaming
child had beaten
him, and he couldn't figure it out. He became obsessed with it, with
her, the champion of
the labyrinth.
Change has blown its fickle winds, and now the labyrinth was an uncertain
place, molded
with the tempestuous moods of its king.
And now he had gone to see her, a visit in the dreams of the young woman.
His soul had been
on the line for her, and yet she had turned away. Away from the chance
to see beyond reality,
away from the chance to be forever and an instant in unison. Never
wishing to see him again,
fighting him with her will.
Chilly night air froze the goblin king's skin. Something else had frozen
his heart. A fatal error,
words not said earlier while there was still a chance..... So Jareth
stared at the sky, lost in what ifs.
