Chapter 1
A single cry erupted from his lips. The voice was strangled, yet hints
of anger could be heard. A boy stood, glaring. His hair
an extremely dark blond and rather tousled, his eyes a shade of green-hazel.
Anger flashed in them, as he glared down at a
small child, a little girl with light brown hair and similar eyes,
which held a wicked mischief.
"I hate you, you rat!" The boy yelled, looking around him at the room.
The once-white walls were covered in splatters of blue
and orange paint, dripping onto the gray carpet. The boy, who appeared
to be around 14 or 15, was panicked, knowing his
parents were going to kill him. He had started to hate Raine, the responsibility
his family had placed on him. Ignored as he
watched his family fall apart, these chores only added to the stress
that slowly poisoned his spirit. "Why do you have to be
such a brat? I'm dead!"
The girl, maybe of 5 years, laughed. Not malicious, but not kind. "You don't play with me."
He just glared at her, then looked down at the book in his hand. He
had found it awhile ago in his sister's things, but only now
read it. It seemed so familiar, as if he knew it, understood it. It
had become important to him, a fantasy beyond all hints of
reality. Whenever he read it, he was also reminded of his beautiful
sister, reminded of the bedtime stories she would tell him
and her shy smile. Thoughts then came to his mind, a desparate plea
of hope. Hope that it cold be true. "I wish the goblins
would come and take you away, right now!!!"
As those words came out of his mouth, wind began to howl, the shutters
banging. The lights began to flicker, and Toby knew
he is in deeper trouble than he imagined. As he stared at his
cousin Raine, the shutters burst open and a snowy-white owl
fluttered into the room.

"Sarah...." Kryssa's voice was sober. "Another child." It wasn't unexpected,
but every time a child was taken, both guardians
felt a bit of sorrow and sympathy.
"Really?" Sarah mentally sighed, though it was quite audible for Kryssa.
They were sisters. yet closer. Two separate entities
that were One. Sarah sent a tendril of her mind out to Jareth, to see
what poor child was taken. She understood it was Jareth's
job, but that didn't mean she had to like the rules. Sarah knew she
had changed over the past five years. She had grown so she
had a difficult time knowing herself sometimes, while at others she
would laugh and dream like she had since she was a just a
child, not knowing the realms she would fantasize about were real,
that she was being watched in her dreams.
Even now she felt a shiver in her soul as she saw the tall, handsome
king. A drifting memory, a chord from a lost
symphony..... she shook them out of her head. She turned her attention
to the child who had called him. He looked familiar, as
if she had know him from a different life....
"Toby!!!!!!!" Sarah's mental scream made Jareth flinch visibly. She
knew he also knew that it was Toby, her little brother
from before, before the accident...... Sarah didn't recognize the girl,
but she knows the look of anguish on Toby's face. The
look of knowing there is truth, terrible truth. "No.... not him, Jareth!
NOT HIM!!!" But Sarah knew the rules as well as Jareth.
He called, Jareth had to obey. Even though she though she could break
it, as she tried to reach out, she felt powerless, torn by
love for Toby and her sense of duty. She locked her mind off so she
couldn't hear them talking, those horrible words, that he
has to solve the Labyrinth....."Toby...." a soft whisper from an place
beyond reality. And in his mind, Toby heard it, but could
not recognize the voice saying his name.
In a whirl of glitter they were gone into the Labyrinth. Kryssa sent
comforting thoughts to Sarah, who could only feel the
frightened look in Toby's eyes. Kryssa was worried. Sarah still wasn't
entirely comfortable with the way things were, the
laws of the Underground, and knew Sarah would be hurt quickly by this,
the Labyrinth hadn't gotten easier. Sarah was
immensly loyal to Jareth and knew his position and loved him so deeply...
but her brother, that could cause such a breach n
everything, the Labyrinth couldn't allow itself to twist for such a
purpose... Kryssa herself had seen so many children taken,
as had Sarah, but never had they felt such remorse. Never had they
known the vicitm.

'Raine.....' Toby squeezed his eyes shut in an attempt to stop the tears
he felt forming. He knew he screwed up.... but why did
this king seem so familiar? It was as if he could see the faint images
through a dense, cold fog. And the Labyrinth.... it was as
if he had been here before.... 'Sarah!' He whispered his name in his
mind. She had loved the book, did she also know it was
real? Or was it just him? He called in his mind, praying for her to
hear from beyond the grave, for anyone to hear, but an
image of Raine kept coming to him. Raine... the tornado who always
got him in trouble. The bane of his existence, who
reminded him that he was now the one who had to take responsibility
for everything because his parents couldn't do so, not
since Sarah died. It was his fault, always his fault.
He opened his eyes and examined his surroundings. He was standing on
a patch of scraggly grass, facing a huge, looming
wall. With a sigh, he headed towards the huge metal door. And somewhere
behind him he heard the words of the goblin king
carried on the wind. "Such a pity you had to return this way....",
but did not understand what they meant.
Chapter 2
"Sarah!" Kryssa urged her friend, winding wisps of energy around
Sarah's essence, both to comfort her and keep her from
going and doing something drastic.
"I'm okay..." Sarah whispered and sent out a tendril of energy to find Jareth, and did so quickly.
Jareth, sitting on his throne, found himself surrounded by glittering,
swirling golden energy. It held him, yet gently and
caressingly, like a lover's hand. "Sarah...." he whispered, his heart
echoing the word. "I know.... but it must be done...." A
crystal had been floating in the air in front of him, within it was
the image of Toby, who had just overcome his first puzzle
and entered the front gate.
A sigh filled his mind, colors lazily drifting. "I know." Sarah's soft
voice surrounded him. "I know it is what you do, I know
that better than you... but it's not fair."
Bitter laughter came from Jareth at the irony of her words. "Indeed.
But as he wished the child away and is your brother, I
give him a good chance." Even as he spoke, he watched the obstinate
little girl who was crouched in a corner, in a staring
contest with a goblin.
Sarah wrapped energy through Jareth's mind, waving streams of blue and
violet thought.... he staggered as he saw her concern
and fear for her brother, her regret at not having watched him grow,
the longing to touch Jareth once more, the dreams of
hundreds of humans that had become her own.... and in an instant Jareth
was back to normal. Raine looked at him curiously,
suspicion still in her eyes. Jareth was grateful for little children,
believing whatever you say and accepting it...
Kryssa ignored the twisting of energy she felt from Sarah, focusing
on the boy. Toby. She watched the teen. He was
handsome, and reminded her of someone she once knew..... a flash of
memory, a split second of eternity..... a boy smiling at
her, and he had a face like Toby's. She shook it off, trying to get
back to her duty of watching his progress.

Somewhere, a presence stirred, one a hundred times more powerful than
the Labyrinth. It felt the shift, the potential danger
against the Laws, and so it sent itself into the mind of a flesh one,
to send a warning.

"Hoggle." A voice that he barely recognized filled the dwarf's head.
Memories of long ago, the friend who became the first to
solve the Labyrinth.
"Sarah? Is that you?" Hoggle couldn't believe it. Dropping the can he used to spray faeries, he looked around wildly.
"Yes." Light laughter followed, but the voice grew serious. "There's
a boy trying to get through the Labyrinth. You must help
him!"
"But Sarah.... where have you been all these years? What--"
"Please!" Her voice cut him off. "I haven't been able to tell you, I
would but I couldn't. But you must help him, please Hoggle,
for me...." The voice faded off onto the winds, and Hoggle began to
head into the vast maze, to find the boy Sarah spoke of.
After Sarah cut off communication and began to weave the threads of
dreams for a writer who lost her muse on Earth, she felt
the reproving emotion from Kryssa.
"That was risky, you know the rules." Kryssa helped a dying blossom
in the Labyrinth, and kept an eye on Toby and the path
he was on. He proved to be as resourceful as his sister when getting
past the first few traps. "Be careful Sarah. We need to
concentrate on the Mind Realms we guide, and not bring down the wrath
of more powerful ones. You don't want trouble to
fall on Jareth and Toby?"
Sarah sighed, withdrawing a bit, and Kryssa sensed her fear. "No. But I don't want the girl to be a goblin."
"I know. But Toby will be fine, Jareth won't be forced to change the
girl." Silently, Kryssa prayed that she wouldn't be a liar
and that Sarah was at least a little comforted.

"Jareth!" the voice carried throughout the throne room. Raine looked
up, alarmed. The goblins looked around in mass
confusion. And Jareth only sighed, knowing who wanted to berate him.
Without Jareth's powers at work, a crystal mirror appeared in front of him, a stern face looking at him. "What now, Jareth?"
Jareth sighed at the face of the Fae Lord. "I don't know, as I see it, you're contacting me, perhaps you should explain?"
The face framed by hair almost as light as Jareth's glared with piercing
dark eyes. "Someone's interfering or will be
interfering with the boy who wished away his cousin. Is it you or that
damn Labyrinth? Why did you have to give the land a
soul like that anyway?"
Jareth smiled, a wicked, knowing smile. "It wouldn't be me, but I assure
you it won't happen. And the maze wouldn't be so
challenging if it were lifeless, at my control. And the dreamers and
wishers need it, as do I to keep it functioning. Kryssa's
soul is powerful, and is perfect to fuel and guide my kingdom. Sarah
just makes it better."
The Fae King glared. "Just make sure non interfere, or you all will
be sorry. *They* can punish your Labyrinth, and *I* will
punish you!" The crystal mirror vanished, leaving Jareth among the
confusion of his subjects, praying for the common sense
of the Labyrinth Guardians, and shaking his head at their risk.
