Breast milk is the healthiest food you can give your newborn, and feeding this "liquid gold" begins on the first day of your baby's life. While there is usually someone available at your place of birth to place baby on your breast for the very first few feedings, there is more you'll need to know once you're home. I offer you a one-class course titled "Breastfeeding: Getting Started" that can be extremely helpful to you when taken *before* your little one arrives. It will provide you with everything you need to know, including -- understanding how the breast functions, creating a good breastfeeding environment at your birth location, the importance of proper positioning, creating the best latch, establishing a baby-led feeding pattern, how to tell if your baby is getting enough, answers to common questions, the benefits of a "baby moon" period after birth, taking care of yourself, and helpful resources to have on hand at home--as well as many beneficial and illustrative reference handouts in a folder for your convenience. When you find yourself at home with your brand new baby, this knowledge will have prepared you to feed him with confidence. I'm a certified birth doula with DONA International (formerly Doulas of North America), a certified childbirth educator with CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association) and have been supporting women in this way since 1996. Please also see my other listings on this website under "Birth Doulas" and "Childbirth Educators", and feel free to visit my BirthWays website for more information.
