People often ask about the technique. It begins with a small pencil sketch, on bleed proof paper. Then it is inked with rapidograph pen,or brush, then enlarged and printed onto heavy cardstock. From there I paint with liquid watercolor dyes which give me the intensity, brilliance and purity of color I want. Then I use regular watercolor, finishing with gouache for details and back to ink. So one can say they are "Mixed Media."
Karen "Sumati" Bates Bio: Born in North Carolina, U.S.A., raised in New York, Karen lives and works in New York City as a full time freelance artist . She holds a Cum Laude B.F.A. degree from Maryland Institute College of Art with a multiple major in Fine Art and Illustration. With over 12 years and current experience as a fashion screen print artist in the New York Garment Center, she also has many published lines of greeting cards, stationery and gift items. Karen also does art and illustration for various other projects including magazine and brochure covers, spot illustrations, children's book illustrations, posters, and art prints. She is also a certified Yoga teacher & has been teaching Yoga since 1988. "I feel very blessed to be making a living at doing what I really love."
