John William Hall passed away quietly on Jan. 22,
2008, less than a
week before his 97th birthday. He was born Jan.
28, 1911 in Joplin,
Mo., to George Isaac Hall and Ollie Lavina (Hughes) Hall. The family
moved to Clayton, N.M., and again to San Diego,
Calif., while he was
young. In the early 1920s, the family settled in
Denver, Colo., where
John graduated from South High School in 1927.
He entered the University of Denver during the Great
Depression, but
money ran out after a year. He worked as a Teletype
operator for the
Western Union, United Press, and the Postal
Telegraph in Denver
during the depression.
John became an air traffic controller, working in
Rapid City, S.D.
and Trinidad, Colo., before World War II. During the
war, Sgt. Hall
was an air traffic controller with the U.S. Army Air
Corps in Agra,
India. He guided the planes that “flew the hump” to
China (the “hump”
being the Himalaya Mountains).
He married Marjorie Louise Saunders in Las Vegas,
N.M. Oct. 4,
1949. They moved to Sidney, Nebr. in 1952. He
retired from Federal
Aviation Administration’s Sidney flight service
station in 1972 and
enjoyed gardening and furniture refinishing. In
2005, Mr. Hall moved
to Seattle, Wash., to be near his daughter.
Marjorie passed away Feb. 6, 1998. John is survived
by his daughter,
Katherine J. (Kathy) Hall of Seattle, Wash., and
eight nieces and
nephews.
He will be buried next to Marjorie at Fort Logan
National Cemetery,
