Last meeting Bobbi Wessling, Manager of the Employment Security Commission located in Mt. Airy, gave us information about the services that they offer including access to job bank, state job listings, networking strategies and entrepreneurial and small business resources. One of the most vital aspects tour community with all the layoffs and closings is the Job Link Center which offers career planning, training and Placement Services.  They work closely with Surry Community College as well as other offices to provide training and job readiness services to retrain our work force for other jobs that are available. So, you Kiwanians that were laid off from your jobs, here’s a chance to get back in the job market!!

A touch loss We’ll miss John Collins.  In his years of membership…..36 to be sure…..John served in many capacities…first as board member, then sec’y-treasurer, president of the club and then Lt. Gov.of our division.  Many of those years he was in the club were years of perfect attendance.  He and Frances represented us at district meetings when some of us would not attend.  If you did not know, John was in the Navy in the Second World War and served on the USS Missouri, which was an aircraft carrier. Would you be surprised to learn that he was one of the Navy men that flagged planes off and back on battles and when he was not during that, he was a gunner??  Yes, John was an outstanding Kiwanian and like we said above, he will be missed.

Door prize Ed Camin was the lucky winner of the draw….one-half of the pot…$5.  But, he donated it back to the club for a total of $10 to the club’s treasury.

Old Business According to info received, The Methodist Church will probably buy the fryers. They are just waiting for approval before they pay.

Board meeting Balances listed by Sec’y-treasurer Donna:  General acct: $5,091 and Foundation as $407.38. New Business The Christmas party will be held on Tuesday, December 4, at 6 P. M. at the Salem Methodist Church.  Sue Cooke will be catering and the club voted that we would not charge members and guest for the meals. The club will also pay for up to eight Key Club members from each of our sponsored clubs. Gentry Middle School will provide entertainment again this year, with Susan Gentry’s talented leadership.

In addition, the directors approved a $75 donation to the Gentry Middle School Choir and $75 to Salem Methodist Church for use of their facilities.  A total of 20 Poinsettias will be purchased and presented to female guest.  With no further business, the meeting was dismissed.

Don’t forget…….our December 4 meeting……Our Christmas party for members and their guest.  No charge!!   Meals are free!!  The party will be held at the Salem United Methodist Church at 6 P. M.  Our ladies will take home a lovely Poinsettia!!   And, remember our MEP…”Serving the Children of the World”
