       Looking for Robinson Jeffers



Looking for Robinson Jeffers
    in a used book store
     among the orderly stacks and shelves
  of hardcover books, neatly preserved
 in tight acetate covers.

Looking for his collected works
  in a dimly lit room,
    in the piled-high mindscape visions,
  in the printed word projectors of
       bright imaginings within us.

So far,
   so far,
                        so far has he come
                    from Lucia - 
      Bright Lucia with pounding foam-white
  rollers on black Saint Francis,
       of Coreopsis on hornblende,
            Juniper on greenstone,
       Chaparral on greywacke.

The foggy rain of Lucia comes
   within these walls
 only in acetate covers.
