|
| Johann Kipp was married to Gesina Kipp. Gesina died at the age of 36 after bearing all 6 children. |
The men in the back row are the Kipp brothers, from left to right: Henry, Frank, Clem, George Frederic, and Ed Kipp.
They are the sons of Johannes (John) Ludwig Kipp who sits in the center front row. Also in the front row are their
wives and one sister. The front row, from left to right are: Mary Murphy, Annie (Kipp) O'Brien (sister), Johann
Kipp, Emma Wing, Eva Gray, and Elizabeth Lieey. Annie (Kipp) O'Brien married Dennis O'Brien (not shown).
George Frederic Kipp and Eva Gray are the parents of Gladys, Lloyd, George LaVergne, and Evelyn Kipp.
Records discovered by Stewart Kipp show the Kipp family tree as far back as the marriage of Johann Kipp to Elisabeth
Rempe in Natzungen, Germany in 1756 (this Johann is our Johann Ludwig Kipp's great grandfather). Johann and Elisabeth
had two known sons, Conrad and Carl Anton Kipp. Carl Anton Kipp, born August 20, 1756 in Natzungen, Germany, married
Catharine Maria Knipping in that same city on June 19, 1784. They had four known children; Johann Conrad Joseph
Kipp born June 6, 1788; Clara A. Marg. Elisabeth Kipp born December 30, 1796; Franz Antonius Kipp born in 1804;
and Johan Franz Wilhelm Henricus Kipp born August 7, 1807.
Johann Conrad Joseph Kipp married Ana Maria Cath. Schrick in 1825, and they had nine children, including our Johannes
Ludwig Kipp who eventually settled near Rescue in California. The nine children were; Maria Ludwika Kipp born
March 16, 1825; A. Maria Theresia Kipp born November 19, 1826; Antonius August Kipp born October 24, 1828;
Johannes Ludwig Kipp born September 23, 1831; Friedick Wilhelm Kipp born February 1, 1834; Clemons August Kipp
born October 3, 1836; Joseph Clemons Kipp born August 12, 1838; Veronic Regina Kipp born October 22, 1840;
and finally Franz Kipp born March 3, 1843. All were born in Natzungen, Germany.

Eventually, four of the brothers (including Johann) and one sister emigrated to America. Joseph Kipp (shown to
the right) was one of Johann's younger brothers.
Except for Johann, the other members of the Kipp family who emigrated to America stayed on the east coast. Descendants
of these relatives live in the eastern USA today.

Johann himself arrived in New York with an older brother in 1845. In 1851, he took a ship for California, crossing
the Isthmus of Panama by land, and arriving in San Francisco that same year. He then traveled to El Dorado County and
landsteaded near Rescue.

This, I believe, is one of the earliest pictures we have of George Frederic's children. Johann Kipp is in the center,
flanked by his five sons and some of their grandchildren. I believe George F. is the man standing just to the right
and behind Johann. Of the rest, I'm not sure who is who. Some of the children are certainly George
F's nieces and nephews. It's also uncertain exactly when this picture was taken, but given the apparent ages of the
various individuals, I would guess late 1910's to early 1920's.
