Nothing to Lose

Starring: Martin Lawrence, Tim Robbins
Directed by: Steve Oederkerk
Released: Buena Vista Pictures, 1997

It's not flashy and it certainly isn't spectacular. But then again, it never pretended to be. Some might be willing to give sentimental points to a movie that knows its limitations, but by and large the comedic pairing of Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins isn't the best idea since sliced bread. Robbins plays an ad exec who finds his wife in bed with another man and on his subsequent suicidal binge, becomes mixed up with a car thief (Lawrence) and a plan to steal half a million dollars. But there's little to laugh out loud about, and films starring Martin Lawrence (or Tim Robbins, for that matter) have never been known for their subtlety. Which means that everything is over the top, and not necessarily in a good way. Sophomoric humor is the main weapon of choice, but the film's saving grace is its breezy running time (97 minutes).
