Steven Spielberg directs this semi-controversial but relatively unseen picture set in 1839 about a gang of slaves being transported from Cuba who overcome and kill all but two of their captors. An American warship eventually captures their vessel and the slaves are put on trial for their ghastly insurrection. Emotionally, thematically, and rhetorically arresting, Amistad proves Spielberg hasn't lost his touch. Also worth watching for a fantastic supporting performance by Anthony Hopkins as former President John Quincy Adams; his David Franzoni-written speech before the Supreme Court during the final act is one of Hollywood's more memorable orations. Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman, Djimon Hounsou, and Stellan Skarsgard are also present in force. One of the best films of 1997.
