KIKO VILLAMIZAR~KIKO Y LA BANDA

Kiko Villamizar was born in Miami, Florida to Colombian parents in the mid- 1970's. As a young boy, he moved to the Andean city of Medellin, Colombia where he learned Latin American folk music through the oral tradition of his family. After performing as a soloist; while singing and playing guitar for tips in local restaurants, on crowded busses and in the streets of Medellin, he returned to Miami to study jazz and music theory after finishing his high school education. He soon began traveling the Americas, absorbing the melodies and beats that he has formed into his own unique mix of Afro-Colombiano, vallenato, ska, reggae and salsa to create a cosmic sound that is highly emotional, danceable and rooted in social awareness and the musical joy and common brotherhood of human beings all over the world.
His culture and life stories are put into his songs as he celebrates life and the universal love of Mother Earth; while lamenting the violence and inequality he has seen in Colombia and in the United States. Kiko's music is not only a fusion of the Andes and the Caribbean, his songs are relevant and contemporary while strongly honoring his roots.
