The US State Dep. advises US citizens not to adopt from the Marshall Islands now because the government of the Marshall Islands is unable to accept travel documents. Visit this site for more information directly from the State Dep.

Since the Marshall Islands are apart of the Federated States of Micronesia, the US State Dep's Page on adoption from Micronesia states that only citizens of Micronesia may adopt Micronesian children. A lawsuit was filed on the isuue of only allowing Micronesian citizens to adopt. Therefore, adoption from the Marshall Islands is difficult, if not legally impossible at this time. I would recommend waiting until new information is posted. (which will be updated on this site).

Pacific Islander Children

The children are newborn to 5 years old. A few children over 5 (older children) are available in the Marshall Islands program. Siblings are sometimes available.

Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis for citizens of other countries.

Requirements

Couples must be married for at least 2 years and they must be between 25 and 50. Singles may adopt.

Process

One trip of 3 weeks is required. Parents meet the birthmother and keep in touch with her throughout the child's childhood. This program isn't good for those who might feel uncomfortable with the birthmother. Parents must travel to the Philippines (for the Marshall Islands) before completing the adoption. Adoptive parents send reports and photos of the child twice a year after adoption. You will usually be able to communicate with each other (send each other photos and letters). In some Pacific Island countries, parents must travel to nearby New Zealand to obtain a US visa for their child, then return home. The trip is usually three weeks, but you only need to travel once. Parents must be married for at least 2 years and be between 25 and 50.

Other Information / Pacific Islands

The Marshall Island program is a very unique program. The currency in the Marshall Islands is the US dollar and most people speak English. The capital is Majuro, and Ebeye is one major city. The Marshall Islands were used as a nuclear test site during the Second World War, and like other countries affected by nuclear activity (such as Ukraine in Chernobyl), there is a higher occurance of cancer (such as thyroid cancer).

The Pacific Islands include the Marshall Islands (and states in the Federated States of Micronesia) and Samoa.

Major Reasons Pacific Islander Children are being put up for Adoption

There is poverty, a high birth rate, and small land mass in the country. This is a rather new adoption program.

Advantages

The majority of the children are newborns.

Disadvantages

Travel is a disadvantage, since one must travel halfway around the world and it is very costly.
