In FY 2003, Cambodia was the 16th most popular adoptive country in the US. In FY 2002, Cambodia was the 11th most popular. (The number of adoptions decreased because of the suspension of adoptions). In Canada, Cambodia became the 15th most popular in 2002.

In FY 2002, 254 Cambodian children were adopted into the US. In 2002 in Canada, 22 were adopted.

Cambodian Children

The children live in orphanages. There are more boys available than girls. Most children are very young infants. Sibling groups of no more than two children are available.


Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis for citizens of other countries.


Requirements

There cannot be more than two children in the home at the time of adoption. Couples with no children may receive an infant of either gender. Couples with a girl must be open to a boy or older girl. Couples with a boy must be open to an infant girl. Singles between 40 and 50 may adopt. With couples, at least one parent must be between 25 and 55.

Process

The process only takes a few months. Medical information is available before you decide to adopt a certain child.

The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh. Cambodia has one of the lowest life expectancies in the world, around 45 for both genders. The country suffers from many landmines, which is a factor in the low life expectancy.
