In FY 2003 and FY 2002, the 4th most popular adoptive country was South Korea. South Korea was also the 4th most popular in Canada in 2002.

1,779 South Korean children were adopted into the US in FY 2002. In Canada, 97 were adopted in 2002.

Korean Children

Most children are available from foster homes.

Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis for citizens of other countries.

Requirements

Couples must be married for at least three years. Parents must be between 25 and 44. Parents should be younger than 45, but there are exceptions, such as one parents is younger than 45, a Korean orphan was already adopted, or the parents want to adopt a child with serious medical conditions. The parents should have at the most, 5 children, including the number of Korean children that will be adopted. The couple shouldn't have an age difference between themselves of more than 15 years. The income of the parents should be higher than the national average and enough to support themselves, the children they may already have in the home, and the new child. However, all families will be reviewed and there may be exceptions to this income preference. I have read that there is a weight requirement of being no more than 30% of the average weight for your height.

Major Reasons Korean Children are being put up for Adoption

Advantages

Int. Korean adoption has been going on for more than 20 years!!! While many int. adoption programs have been going on between 8 and 5 years, this is remarkable. The Korean adoption program is certainly a well-established one!
Many families adopt a girl from China, then a boy from Korea. The fact that escorts are available is very positive. You don't need to worry about the expenses of traveling halfway across the world. There are no health affects of being in an instatutionalized home (developmental delays, etc.) because most children are from foster homes.

Disadvantages

1.)The US State Dep's Page on Adoptions from S. Korea.

2.)Sung Bin Yeo Sa Orphanage.
