In Canada in 2002, Taiwan was the 16th most popular adoptive country with 19 adoptions.

Taiwanese Children

More boys are available than girls. Special needs, siblings, and older children are available. Most children are infants who arrive home at 6 - 8 months old. Twins may also be adopted.

Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis for citizens of other countries.

Requirements

Single men and women and married couples may adopt. Parents must be 20 years older than the child. With couples, both parents need to meet this requirement. Parents must be between 25 and 55. Couples must have been married for at least 5 years. Preference is given to couples. Families already with children at home may adopt, but they must be open to adopting older children, siblings, or special needs children. Infertile married couples are especially welcomed into the Taiwan adoption program.

Process

The time spent in Taiwan is 5 - 7 days. Birthpartents may sometimes be able to select adoptive parents. Reports on the children are required after adoption.
