Hong Kong Children
The children are between six months and 18 years of age. The Hong Kong children have Chinese features. Children classified
as having special needs have health problems, including mental and physical disabilities, and/or an unstable family background.
Healthy children are usually older children (over 5). The children usually reside in orphanages or foster homes.
Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis
for citizens of other countries.
Requirements
Must be at least 25 years old. Parents should be married for at least 3 years and 5 years if it is the second marriage. Parents
over 45 must be open to adopting an older child or one with special needs. Parents of Chinese origin have priority when adopting
from Hong Kong. There is a weight requirement for parents according to the age of the adoptee. Parents must be in good physical
and mental health. Singles over 25 may adopt if they are able to parent, have enough money, and support from family members.
Singles who may not meet this requirement can adopt a special needs child. Parents who aren't of Chinese descent should be
open to adopting a child with special needs or an older child. Hong Kong officials look carefully at your income and education.
You may be required to have a physical exam.
Process
The trip to Hong Kong is about a week and only one parent needs to travel.

Other Information / Hong Kong
Hong Kong is really apart of China. This happened after the 100-year lease of Hong Kong to Britian expired in 1997. The reason
the adoption laws are different than that of China is because Hong Kong has its own governemnt. China classifies itself as
having "one country, two systems". Hong Kong is Capitalist and China is Communist. Residents speak English and Mandarin Chinese
in Hong Kong. Macau, which used to be a Portuguese colony, is also a Capitalist city in China. Both are port cities. Hong
Kong has small land mass because it is just a city.
Major Reasons Hong Kong Children are being put up for Adoption
They are usually put up for adoption because their parents may not be able to care for their special needs or because of family
issues.
Advantages
The children receive excellent health care and birthmothers receive excellent prenatal care in Hong Kong. There is extensive
information available on the children.
Disadvantages
Travel is a disadvantage, since one must travel halfway around the world and it is very costly.
