Albanian Children
The children all stay in orphanages, none are in foster homes.
Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis
for citizens of other countries.
Requirements
There must at least an 18 year age difference between the parents and child. At least one parent must be over 25 and a US
citizen. Singles and married couples may adopt.
Process
One can't work directly with the Albanian Adoption Commitee, an orphanage, or birthparents. The child you are preparing to
adopt must have a certificate stating he/she is adoptable from the Albanian Adoption Commitee. To be adoptable, the child
must have been in an orphanage for 6 months or more and not have contact with his/her birthparents during that time. The orphanage
must also have tried to place the child with an Albanian family. Once a child is selected, the adoption commitee must approve
the adoption. Your agency may contact the commitee. The commitee may propose a child. There will be a court hearing. The maximum
stay in Albania is 20 days. Parents can choose between one trip or two trips. The process will go faster if you don't have
a criminal record.
Documents Needed
Like with all other adoption countries, a home study is needed. A written request with the reason you want to adopt, a birth
certificate, marriage, divorce, or spouse death certificate, if applicable, are all needed. A police clearance, personal,
family, social and medical information of the parents are also necessary. These documents can be submitted to your agency.

Other Information / Albania
Only the Int. Children's Alliance and Bethany Christian Services are allowed to place Albanian children with American families.
Major Reasons Albanian Children are being put up for Adoption
Albania is considerably the poorest country in Europe. The capital of Albania is Tirana.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Since the children reside in orphanages, they will usually have delays
(speech, coordination, etc.), which most of them recover from after they receive more one-on-one attention.
