In FY 2002, Peru was the 19th most popular adoptive country in the US with 65 adoptions.

Peruvian Children

Infants until the age of 16 are available. Hispanic, native, and mixed native-Spanish heritage children are available. Birthmothers give their child directly to you or through a third party (adoption agency). Many parents want infants, but there aren't many available.

Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis for citizens of other countries.

Requirements

Parents must be at least 18 years older than the child and be under 55. For couples, both parents must go to Peru to adopt. Only married couples are accepted. The time spent in Peru is 15 - 20 days. A family with children already in the home is allowed to adopt. Single women usually adopt an older or special needs child, and they must be open to that possibility.

Process

It is best to use a US-based agency, since Peruvian lawyers or agencies have different laws because they facilitate domestic Peruvian adoptions. Post-adoption checks are required by the Peruvian govt., which your adoption agency will complete. The price range is $5000 - $7000, not including travel. You must announce your decision to adopt within a time range of about 15 - 20 working days.

Documents Needed

The birth and marriage certificates of both parents, a home study, physical and psychological health reports, financial and employment certifications, references, and police clearances are all required. Other documents may required as well. US documents are authenticated by the Peruvian govt. after the seal of a U.S. notary public or the appropriate document issuing office is obtained. The seal is authenticated by the clerk of court in the county where the notary is licensed or by a similar authority, then authenticated by your state's Secretary of State, and then by the U.S. Department of State Authentication Office. After the State Dep, the Peruvian embassy or consulate in your region must authenticate.
