The Children
The children available are 2 months old until the age of 16. Both boys and girls are available.
Children with special needs are available. If the child has two living parents or a stepfather, he/she is not qualified to
be adopted. The child must meet the defination of an orphan by both the Honduras and American govts.
Note: The requirements and process below is combined with US laws, but it should be a basis
for citizens of other countries.
Requirements
Parents must be between 25 and 50. Single women may adopt. Couples must be married for at least 3 years. There are two trips
to Honduras, both being 3 - 5 days. The child must be 15 years younger than the youngest parent. Spouses must agree to the
adoption. Both parents must travel to Honduras.
Process
The entire process will take about 6 months to one year. There are no adoption lawyers, only adoption agencies that are legally
allowed to faciliatate adoptions. The agencies must be registered with the Honduras govt's social welfare agency (IHNFA).
Weather / Climate
From February until April, the climate is dry, and the temperature is in the 80's F/ 28-32 C. The nights cool down to the
60's F/ 16-22 C. From the middle of December until February, the weather is more chillier. Mid September until mid-December,
the climate is cool with some rainfall. The rainy season reaches its peak from the middle of May to the middle of September.
During this time, there are heavy showers once or twice each day, with the remainder of the day being sunny. On the Bay Is.
and northern coast, rain is heaviest October until December or January, with April, May and September the hottest. In the
Bay Is., the summer is rather dry except tropical disturbances (thunderstorms, tropical storms/ depressions) can cause in
extremely heavy amounts of rain. The Caribbean lowlands are tropical wet with humidity, high temperatures, and evenly falling
rain year-round. The pacific lowlands are tropical wet and dry with high temperatures, but a dry summer from November to April.
The interior highlands also have this dry season, but as the altitude becomes higher, the temperatures decrease. The capital,
Tegucigalpa is in a valley in the interior highlands 1000 meters above sea level. April is the warmest month and January the
coldest. There is a hurricane threat during the summer months for Honduras. Take a jacket year-round. From mid May until the
middle of September, bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella.
Other Information / Honduras
The capital is Tegucigalpa. Puerto Lempira, Santa Rosa de Copan, and Swan Is. are some major cities and destinations. The
country is bordered by Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, and buffered by the Caribbean Sea. The primary language
is Spanish.
Major Reasons these Children are being put up for Adoption
Due to poverty, many children are given up because their families can no longer afford to care for them. Unwed pregnancies
can also be a reason.
Advantages
Since Honduras is relatively close to the US and Canada, the cost of flying there will be less expensive than with other adoption
programs. Honduras is a rather well-established adoption program since it has been going on for about 15 years, which is more
than most int. adoption countries.
