392.     Johnson, Daniel A. Just In Case: A Passenger’s Guide to Airplane Safety and Survival. New York: Plenum Publishing, 1984. 268 pages. Dr. Johnson specializes in safety card design and cabin crew training. Johnson extensively discusses many cabin safety problems and uses specific accidents as examples to illustrate the points made. One of the major themes of the book is how much to educate and how to educate passengers about escaping an aircraft following an accident. Even today, the quality and the amount of information contained on safety cards vary immensely between carriers. Good diagrams, tables and illustrations. Includes extensive end-of-chapter references. Marginal index. Appendix listing accidents where passengers were required to operate exits. See also: Edwards & Edwards, The Passenger Cabin and Birch, Passenger Protection Technology in Aircraft Accident Fires. The book is organized as follows:

The Survivable Accident
How People Behave in Emergencies
Decompressions
Inflight Emergencies
Safe Seating Locations
How to Prepare for the Unexpected Crash on Landing or Takeoff
Fire
Emergency Escape After an Accident on Land
Ditchings
Stress Reactions Following Accidents

From a cabin safety and survival perspective, the following accidents or incidents are discussed in some detail:

TWA L-1011/AA DC-10 Nov. 26, 1975 (N11002/N124) near Carleton, MI

393.     Kahn, F. S. The Curse of Icarus: The Health Factor in Air Travel. London: Routledge, 1990. 180 pages. A semi-scholarly treatment of the health considerations in air travel. Should be of particular interest to pilots, flight attendants, and frequent fliers. Discusses some of the basics of flight physiology, flying faster than sound, ozone, and radiation exposure in high-altitude flight, hypoxia, hyperventilation, fear of flying, etc. Particularly interesting is the discussion of how the people on board the Concorde would avoid aeroembolism (the “bends”) if a window should shatter at 65,000 feet (pages. 110-111). However, no mention is made of the consequences should a larger hole open up at that altitude. Extensive chapter references. Index.
