24W Comparison

These lights are the "little brothers" of the bigger HID lights. The units tend to be a bit thinner, but most of them actually longer than their larger siblings.

You would have a very hard time trying to distinguish these lights by just looking at the spec sheets. They are that close. But it's always interesting to see if the specs sheet will hold up in the real world. Just as the 35W and 50W units differed quite a bit, let's see how these lights compare to each other.

1) Zoom (Telephoto) Shots: Target is 150 yards away

These photos show close up shots around the target. We can see how these lights can focus and illuminate an object far away. All All three lights have a similar pattern, so it was easy to compare them.

These shots are taken at a F5.6, 15" exposure, compared to the F5.6, 5" exposure with the larger units. The 24W units were simply not bright enough to show any significant difference at that exposure. However, I added the Polarion at the same 15" exposure as a reference so you can compare how each light compares with the 35W or 50W models.

The Wolfeyes L06-K1850 Shark-II 24w (what a long name - can anyone remember that?) was obviously the loser. You can clearly see that not only is the hotspot the weakest, the foreground illumination is the dimmest as well. It does seem to have the widest ground illumination, though.

The Brightstar P1 24W fares much better than the Wolfeyes. The center beam is much stronger, and the foreground is brighter also, at the cost of a reduction in illumination area.

The AE Powerlight 24W performed very much like the brightstar, but it was just brighter in every way.

The Polarion at 15" is really impressive. Judging from this, the AE Powerlight might actually be close in terms of performance to the Razorlight at 35W. I'll have to check that one.

2) Wide Angle Shots: Target is 150 yards away

I didn't take wide angle shots for the 24W because they all had sufficiently similar patterns that would have made it irrelevant.

Another factor that led me not to take the photos (perhaps more important than the first), is that the battery on my camera died.

Sorry. Maybe next time.

3) Evaluation

I just love it when a review is this concise. It's so easy to pick a winner.

Here goes..... Sound the fanfare!

The Wolfeyes 24W is another disappointment. You might recall their 35W Crocodile II was also dead last on our HID lights 1 Comparison. Not a lot to say about that. The Brightstar P1 and the AE Powerlight are quite similar in every way except ultimate performance. The AE powerlight is simply better.

So, how does the best 24W compare to 35W? As I mentioned above, the AE Powerlight might actually be competitive with the Razorlight at 35W. But with the X990 or Polarion, not a chance.
