Photo Identification of The Giant Sea Bass

After many dives with the giant sea bass, it was obvious that some fish had unique features or markings. Some of these features or markings can be used to identify individual fish. Each fish that is identified is given a name that is associated with their unique feature.

"Hunchback" is named for the unusually high arch of the dorsal surface, Hunchaback has been seen at three different sites at Anacapa Island.

"Lefty" has some broken fin rays in his tail, causing the tail fin to curl to the left side. Lefty has returned to the same site three years in a row.

"Gilligone" is missing a portion of the left gill cover. Gillagone was observed during two successive seasons.

"G-String" has fishing line trailing from the ventral area. G-String is very territorial, and like Lefty has been in our sightings for three years.
