In 1907 Shackleton commanded an attempt to reach the South Pole. He came within 179 km (111 mi) of his goal on January 9, 1909. From 1914 to 1916 he attempted unsuccessfully to reach the Ross Sea from the Weddell Sea by crossing the Antarctic continent.
