GENERAL SOCIAL STUDIES WEBSITES AND PORTALS

Some Social Studies material will be found on sites on the GENERAL EDUCATION AND TEACHER page

THE SOCIAL STUDIES INDEX maintained by the University of Kansas, this is a terrific portal for information about all kinds of history. Is is alphabetically organized by topics, and gives links to about 4,000 Sites

SOCIAL STUDIES HELP CENTER is a web site put together by teacher in New Hyde Park NY. While it is designed primarily for the use of his students, it is nevertheless quite useful for others as well, and points at a lot of good material

SOCIAL STUDIES Maintained by the School of Education at the University of North Carolina, has links to a number of good sites, many of which are already mentioned within this web site. This is still worth exploring

ATLAPEDIA An on-line atlas. Maintained by Larimar Clark Corp., this gives access to political and physical maps on-line, the average size of which is over 80K, so be selective in your downloading.

NEWSPAPER LINKS To teach almost any Social Studies content, it is helpful to have access to a variety of news sources. This is a portal maintained by the Newspaper Association of America. It brings up a map, which gives you one way to find newspapers in large, medium and even some small cities all over the U.S. You can click on a state to get a list of the papers therein by city, with hotlinks to their web sites. A great way of having students explore how issues play differently across the country, or to see what is considered of major importance in a different city or state.

SOUNDPRINT MEDIA, INC. provides a source of radio and TV material, partially from National Public Radio (or as it is now known, PRI). It is a good source for documentary material, and - as many sites do - gives a list of their favorite web sites.

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME yes, aging baby boomers and others, this site has lesson plans using songs.Only problem: for copyright reasons the actual lyrics/music are not available directly on web. Gives a lot of good ideas of using music to teach specific points of history, and not all current (NOTE: when I've taught anything about the 1960-170s, I've done a lesson using songs from Vietnam era that works very well). This is another site about which I learned via the Reach Every Child people.

THE AVALON PROJECT AT YALE LAW -- A portal to documents about Law, History and Diplomacy, organized by Century. Includes texts of treaties and international agreements, presidential papers, papers of the ratification of the Constitution, etc. added 2000-02-10.

DO HISTORY'S LINKS-- A portal prepared by our good friend Laurie Leavitt-Kahn, Producer of the award-winning film "A Midwife's Tale." It is annotated, and organized by category, with information about film, women's history, midwifery, film, etc. Take some time and explore!!!! Also explore the entire web site for the project, DO HISTORY, which includes the text of the diary of Martha Ballard (the midwife), other source documents, some guidance in how to do history on your own, etc. added 2000-02-15.
