An Image from Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series (added 01/08/02) note that there are two separate links on this line
The art of Jacob Lawrence - this site will give you a sense of his work (added 01/08/02)
The Best way to look at the whole Migration of the Negro series is through the website of the Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Foundation. However, navigation is NOT intuitive. Therefore I suggest you print out this page and follow the instructions, BEFORE clinking on the link below.
1. Click on link. That will take to to the home page of the Foundation.
2. Position cursor under number 2 - this will bring up an image that says "art and Life". Single click on that image.
3. On the screen that comes up, position cursor on fourth (second big) box on the left. A pop=up image will appear saying "IMAGE ARCHIVE" - single click on that image.
4. On screen that comes up, scroll down through the page until you see a box that says "Series."
5. Scroll in that box (using the arrow) until you are on the line that says "The Migration of the Negro, 1941" and release. That should place the text in the box and return you to the screen. Now go to bottom of this page and single click on the button that says "Submit."
6. This will bring up a screen with several thumbnail (small) images, and will be labeled "Page 1 of 7." There will be two boxes labeled "The Migration of the Negro, No. 1." The one of the left may not have an image. The second such box has a small image of the first picture in the series. Single click on that picture.
7. You are now on a large image of the first of the 60 images in the series. You can navigate through by single clicking on the appropriate text on the line that says "Previous image/Next Image." NOTE: do NOT use your forward or back button, only the words just noted. The caption/title for each picture will appear on the left side of the image.
You are of course welcome and encouraged to look at the other works by Lawrence. He was truly one of America's greatest painters.
